Zipping Files

Oftentimes we want to send multiple files to people or make them available for download on our site. Zipping files is the most bandwidth efficient way to make multiple files available. Lots of people know how to unzip, but not to zip. Here are instructions for zipping files with Winzip. This is assuming you are using the most current version.

Creating a New Archive

This method works when you have Winzip
associated with your file manager

• Highlight the file(s) you want to send.
• Right click on your mouse button.
• Highlight "add to zip" from the menu and click once. You will be presented with a Winzip screen.
• The top line "Add to Archive" window will be highlighted. If you are zipping just one file, Winzip will automatically name the archive for you. If you are zipping multiple files, you will see the current path listed. If you start to type, all the path information will be lost. If you want to save your archive in the subdirectory where the files are, just press one of your arrow buttons or your mouse button to deselect the line. At the end of the path, type your preferred zip file name.
• Press the "add" button.
• You will be taken to another Winzip window that will show all the current files in your archive. If you have everything in there, just close Winzip. If you forgot a file, you can press the "add" button to add more files.

Alternate Method

• Open Winzip (winzip32.exe).
• Click on the "new" button.
• Browse to the directory where you want to create your file and type in your file name and extension.
• Click on the "add" button to add files to your archive. Browse to the location, click and press ok.
• Continue adding files until you have all files added to your archive.

Adding Files to an Existing Archive

• Double click on your existing zip file.
• You will get a Winzip window that lists all the files in your archive.
• Click the "add" button and browse to your file.
• Once you see the file listed, you are done and can exist Winzip.

Setting up Winzip

• Open Winzip 32 bit application.
• Choose "options/program location."
• Here are what your choices will probably look like:
  • Viewer: C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE
  • Make EXE: C:\WINZIP\WZSEPE32.EXE
  • Scan Program: (optional) SCAN95.EXE (or your scan program exe file)
  • Parameters: *.* /autoscan /nosplash
  • If you have ARJ, LHA, or ARC on your computer, type in the exact path locations.
• If you want Winzip to automatically download files to a folder of your choice after clicking on the internet, follow these steps:
  • Choose "options/configure internet browser support."
  • Choose "change download folder."
  • Check "Move internet downloads" if you want the file to be just placed in a folder of your choice.
  • Click on the "check compatibility" button to make sure Winzip is compatible with the browser you are using.
• To associate Winzip with Windows 95, follow the following steps: (this is highly recommended)
  • Choose "options/explorer configuration."
  • Check all boxes. If you don't want Winzip on your desktop, leave the bottom box unchecked.
  • Choose "options/file manager configuration."
  • Check top two boxes.

Linking to a Zipped File

You link to a zipped archive just like an HTML document. If your file were named "myfile.zip" and it was in your root directory, here is what the link would look like:
